How Oregon became a state
Settled by overland pioneers via the Oregon Trail in the 1840s, the Oregon Territory was organized in 1848. The state was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1859 — Valentine’s Day — as the 33rd state, the first Pacific coast state north of California.
