Is the US flag at half-staff today?+
The answer for today — nationally and for every state — is at the top of this page. When a half-staff order is in effect, the page shows the reason and the authority behind it.
Who can order the flag to half-staff?+
Nationwide half-staff is set by presidential proclamation. A state's governor can also order flags lowered within that state — select any state on the board for its current status, who holds that authority there, and the official source. Certain dates are fixed by the U.S. Flag Code itself.
When is the US flag flown at half-staff by law?+
Five days each year are set by the U.S. Flag Code: Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, Memorial Day on the last Monday in May (half-staff until noon, then full staff until sunset), Patriot Day on September 11, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on December 7, and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, whose date is set each year. Every other half-staff period comes from a presidential proclamation or a governor’s order.
How long does a half-staff order last?+
It depends on the order. Some proclamations set a specific number of days; others run until sunset on the day of interment. Because sunset is local, a flag on the West Coast stays lowered a few hours after one on the East Coast on the final day.
How do you display the flag at half-staff?+
Raise the flag briskly to the peak for an instant, then lower it slowly to the halfway point. Raise it again to the peak before lowering it for the day. If your flag is on a fixed wall bracket and cannot be lowered, the customary alternative is to attach a black mourning streamer.
