Carved from the Louisiana Purchase, Missouri’s admission to the Union triggered the constitutional crisis settled by the Missouri Compromise: it entered as a slave state on August 10, 1821, balanced by Maine’s admission as a free state the prior year. St. Louis became the gateway to America’s westward expansion.
