After the federal government opened millions of acres of “unassigned lands” to settlers in the 1889 Land Rush, the Twin Territories — Oklahoma and Indian — merged and joined the Union on November 16, 1907 as the 46th state. The name combines two Choctaw words meaning “red people.”
