How Kentucky became a state
Carved out of western Virginia, Kentucky was the first U.S. state west of the Appalachians. Settlers led by Daniel Boone pushed through the Cumberland Gap beginning in 1775, and Kentucky joined the Union on June 1, 1792 — establishing the model by which other territories would later be admitted.
