Carved from the Dakota Territory, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted on the same day, November 2, 1889. President Benjamin Harrison signed both proclamations after they had been shuffled, leaving the admission order officially unknown — North Dakota is conventionally listed as the 39th state and South Dakota as the 40th.
