How Montana became a state
Mineral strikes at Bannack, Virginia City, and Helena swelled the population of Montana Territory in the 1860s. The state was admitted on November 8, 1889 as the 41st state, and copper mining at Butte’s Anaconda mine made the territory one of the most lucrative in the West.
