Two University of Virginia roommates had just bombed their first startup pitch — a mobile food-ordering app nobody wanted — when Paul Graham told them to come back with a better idea. Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian spent their spring break in 2005 brainstorming what they called "the front page of the Internet," then shipped it out of Medford, Massachusetts, in June, with Huffman coding the entire site in Common Lisp. To hide the fact that almost no one was reading it, the two founders created hundreds of fake accounts to fill the front page with links — until, by August, real users had made the deception unnecessary…
