By 1938, Howard Hughes was rich and reclusive, better known for his fortune than his flying. On July 10, he lifted off from New York City in a twin-engine Lockheed 14 Super Electra, crewed by four men and packed with the latest radio and navigation gear, bound for a circuit of the globe. Four days later, on July 14, he landed back in New York having circled the earth in just under 91 hours. The record he broke had stood at nearly eight days…
