Twttr goes public; Dorsey's SMS side project escapes the podcasting company that built it

Born inside Odeo, a podcasting firm losing ground to iTunes, the short-message service lets users broadcast to small groups in 140 characters by text.

In February 2006, Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams were working at Odeo, a podcasting company already losing ground to iTunes. Dorsey and contractor Florian Weber built a prototype for sending short messages to small groups by SMS, code-named Twttr. Dorsey and Weber built the prototype in the following weeks, and the service launched publicly on July 15, 2006. Six months later the founders bought the domain twitter.com and renamed it…
