Planes from Henderson Field knock Tanaka cold and sink his transport off Guadalcanal
A rescuing destroyer catches five bombs from B-17s and sinks while pulling survivors off the transport she came to save.
Rear Admiral Raizō Tanaka was still trying to land his convoy on Guadalcanal a day late, after a PBY sighting forced him to reverse course on August 23. At 8:05 a.m. on August 25, eighteen Marine and Navy aircraft from Henderson Field caught his ships in the open, battering the cruiser Jintsu, which lost 24 crewmen, and leaving Tanaka unconscious. The transport Kinryu Maru took a hit and began sinking; the destroyer Mutsuki pulled alongside to rescue survivors and was sunk outright by four B-17s from Espiritu Santo. Tanaka shifted his flag to the destroyer Kagerō and pulled the convoy back to the Shortland Islands…
