Dr. Bruce Banner shields a teenager from an experimental bomb blast and transforms at nightfall into a gray-skinned creature built from Frankenstein, Jekyll, and a mother lifting a car.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Incredible Hulk #1 hit newsstands in May 1962, introducing Dr. Robert Bruce Banner — a physicist who, after absorbing a massive dose of gamma radiation while saving teenager Rick Jones during an experimental bomb detonation, transforms at nightfall into a gray-skinned, lumbering creature a soldier simply describes as "a hulk." Lee had drawn on Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Kirby had been thinking about a mother lifting a car off her trapped child. The character they built from those pieces would outlast almost everything else they made together…
