Jackson waves a rusted sword and turns back a Union rout at Cedar Mountain

By August 1862, John Pope's Army of Virginia was pushing south into Culpeper County, and Stonewall Jackson moved to strike its vanguard before reinforcements arrived. On August 9, in 98-degree heat, Nathaniel Banks attacked Jackson's forces despite being outnumbered two to one. Confederate lines nearly broke, but Jackson rallied his men personally, and the arrival of A.P. Hill's division turned the tide.
