Black Hawk surrenders; the Sauk war chief is handed to Lieutenant Jefferson Davis
Weeks after the killing at Bad Axe, Black Hawk emerges from hiding to end a war his people could no longer fight.
About three and a half weeks after U.S. forces cut down hundreds of his people at the Battle of Bad Axe, Black Hawk had run out of places to hide. On August 27, 1832, the Sauk war chief and the prophet Wabokieshiek came out of hiding on a small Mississippi River island and gave themselves up. They had hoped to surrender to Indian agent Joseph Street, but were brought instead before Zachary Taylor, and the formal surrender was taken by a young lieutenant named Jefferson Davis.
